Does a BMW have built-in tracking? Model by model, with Mini
Most do, in part. Every BMW built from 2013 has a SIM card permanently installed, and with Remote Services the My BMW App can lock and unlock the car and “see the vehicle location”.1,2 That isn’t stolen-vehicle tracking, though: BMW South Africa lists no recovery service or control room, and its theft alerts need the optional alarm.1,2
Checked on 27 October 2026 against BMW South Africa’s ConnectedDrive terms (revised January 2026), its model pages and MINI South Africa’s documents.

Has my BMW got a tracking device?
If it was built from 2013, it has a SIM card, and it may report its location. BMW says “In BMW vehicles from 2013 onwards, a SIM card is permanently installed”, and its South African ConnectedDrive Store lists Remote Services as free of charge.1 The My BMW App is “optimised for vehicles built from 2014 onwards”, and BMW warns that the features depend on the car’s equipment and contract and “may vary between countries”.13
BMW’s South African terms describe Remote Services plainly: you can “remotely lock and unlock your vehicle”, “activate a headlight flash or horn blow e.g. to help you find your vehicle in a parking lot”, and “In addition, you can see the vehicle location.” They need two option codes, Teleservices and Remote Services, and on cars with BMW Operating System 9 or later Remote Services are part of the Digital Base.2
What happens when someone tries to steal a BMW?
It tells you, but only if the car has BMW’s optional alarm. With Anti-Theft Notification, “all mapped users will receive a notification via the My BMW App in case the alarm system is set off, including the location of the car at this time”. It needs BMW Operating System 8.5 or later and the Alarm System or Alarm System Plus, it is “deactivated by default”, and “car tracking must be activated”. Anti-Theft Recorder has the car’s cameras film when the alarm goes off, and also needs the alarm.2
BMW includes theft notification in BMW Digital Premium, and says: “The optional alarm system is required for notification and video recording of attempted thefts.”1
How do I turn BMW vehicle tracking on or off?
In the car, through iDrive. On a BMW with Operating System 9, BMW South Africa gives the path as “Apps menu > ‘All’ > ‘Privacy’ > ‘All services incl. analysis’ > ‘My BMW App and My BMW portal’ > activate or deactivate and confirm with ‘OK’ if required”.14
Switching it off has a cost: “If vehicle tracking is deactivated, the vehicle position will not be displayed in the My BMW App and in the My BMW portal.”14 It also affects the theft alerts, because BMW’s terms for Anti-Theft Notification say “car tracking must be activated”.2
Can BMW track a stolen BMW?
Not as a recovery service. BMW South Africa’s terms list no geofence, no remote immobiliser and no stolen-vehicle tracking, and the only call centre they describe takes Intelligent eCall emergencies. What BMW does offer after a theft is a list of the car’s digital keys: “In case of theft of your vehicle, we will list active keys at the time of theft upon request of the investigating authorities.”2
The base services run for “an indefinite duration”, although BMW can end the contract “at the earliest 5 (five) years after its commencement”, and Digital Premium is a monthly or yearly subscription.2 We found no insurer that accepts ConnectedDrive as an approved tracker.
BMW 3 Series
The 3 Series is the BMW on the hijacking lists. King Price ranks it tenth for 2026 and says it is “targeted by organised crime networks for high-value resale or export”.5 De Wet de Villiers Brokers put it sixth among the “most hijacked vehicles in 2025”, Pineapple counts it among the high-risk vehicles, and The Star wrote in June 2025 that “Other vehicles frequently listed as high-risk include the BMW 3 Series”. None gives counts.15,16,17
The current 3 Series sedan’s page mentions BMW Digital Key Plus, which “requires BMW ConnectedDrive Services and a suitable smartphone”.4 BMW says Digital Key Plus unlocks the car as you approach and lets you “start the car with the phone in your pocket”.18
BMW X5
The X5’s page offers theft video as an option: “If the anti-theft alarm system is triggered, the exterior and interior cameras of your BMW record videos”, with “push notifications via the My BMW App”. It needs ConnectedDrive and a suitable phone, and the anti-theft alarm itself is marked optional, as is the Drive Recorder.8
The X5 isn’t on a recent list, but it is stolen. In December 2025 IOL reported that a “silver grey BMW X5 SUV”, reported stolen a week earlier in the Waterval policing area, was found at a suspect’s home in Ha-Mashau village, Vhembe.9
BMW X3
The X3’s page invites you to “Use the BMW Digital Key Plus to open and lock your BMW contactlessly with your smartphone as soon as you are within range”, without saying which versions have it.7 We found no 2025 or 2026 source that names the X3. An older case shows why a tracker matters on one: in October 2024 a white X3 stolen in Westville, Durban, was stopped on the R40 near Barberton after “A vehicle tracking company alerted police”.19
BMW 1 Series, X1 and X7
Little is published for these three beyond BMW’s brand-wide terms. The 1 Series is sold as the 118 Sports Hatch and the M135 xDrive.3 The X1’s page says “Compatible mobile devices become your BMW Digital Key”, which can be “shared with up to five people”, and mentions no alarm or immobiliser.6 The X7’s page mentions none of Digital Key Plus, the alarm, the Anti-Theft Recorder or any tracking feature.10 We found no source naming any of the three as a target.
Does a Mini have built-in tracking?
In the same limited way. Mini’s service is MINI Connected, used through the MINI App.20 The app works with “all MINI vehicles from the March 2018 model year onwards” that have ConnectedDrive Services, and offers “Remote Controls like unlock & lock” and a way to “Conveniently track down where you’ve parked”.21
Mini’s South African service descriptions say “Remote Services are standard equipment for vehicles produced after March 2018”, that “GPS must be enabled in the vehicle to see the vehicle location data in the app or portal”, and that “You are proactively informed if you left your car unlocked”. Remote Services last for the life of the car. The document has no anti-theft service, and its call centre handles only concierge and emergency calls.22
Mini Cooper and Countryman
Both standard-equipment lists include “Remote Services - Operating vehicle functions from the mobile phone” and “Teleservices, incl. Emergency call”. The Cooper’s adds a wheel bolt lock, and neither lists an alarm or an immobiliser.11,12 Mini Digital Key Plus is an option with Comfort Access on cars built from July 2024: “As soon as you approach your MINI with the MINI Digital Key Plus, it recognises the digital key and unlocks the doors.”23 We found no source naming either Mini as a target.
What to fit to a BMW or Mini
A tracker with a recovery service, since neither BMW nor Mini offers one. If you rely on BMW’s own theft alerts, check that your car has the optional alarm, because without it there is no Anti-Theft Notification or recorder.2
Our deals start from R99pm for a wireless recovery unit, or R149pm for a full insurance-approved tracker. Free installation, 36-month contract.

Questions people ask
Do BMWs have location tracking?
Most do, through Remote Services in the My BMW App, which lets you see the vehicle’s location. BMW has fitted a SIM card to its cars since 2013, but it offers no team that follows or recovers a stolen car.
Does a BMW tell you if it is being stolen?
Only if it has BMW’s optional alarm and Anti-Theft Notification is switched on: then the My BMW App alerts you when the alarm goes off, with the car’s location at that moment. The service is off by default.
Does Mini have built-in tracking?
Minis built after March 2018 have Remote Services as standard, so the MINI App can show where you parked and lock or unlock the car. Mini’s South African documents list no theft alerts or stolen-vehicle recovery.
Is BMW a high risk car in South Africa?
The 3 Series is. It is tenth on King Price’s 2026 top 10, which says it is “targeted by organised crime networks for high-value resale or export”, and Pineapple lists it among other high-risk vehicles. None of these lists gives a figure.
