Car trackers for a Land Rover or Jaguar: Secure Tracker and theft risk

Some do. Land Rover’s InControl services include Secure Tracker and Secure Tracker Pro, and with them “If your vehicle is tampered with or stolen, our dedicated Stolen Vehicle Tracking Centre is instantly alerted.”1,2 Land Rover South Africa’s specifications list the Remote app as standard but not Secure Tracker, and the service has to be activated, so ask whether your car has a tracker that is actually running.2,3

Checked on 27 October 2026 against Land Rover and Range Rover South Africa’s InControl, Secure Tracker and specification pages, and Jaguar South Africa’s site.

What does Land Rover’s Secure Tracker do?

Land Rover’s connected services run under InControl, with the Remote app, Secure Tracker and Secure Tracker Pro. In Land Rover’s words, “If someone moves your Land Rover illegally, Secure Tracker and Secure Tracker Pro keep you one step ahead.”1

When a theft is confirmed with the owner, the Stolen Vehicle Tracking Centre works with the police using real-time GPS, and the Remote app’s features are switched off for the duration. “A direct number to the dedicated in-market Stolen Vehicle Tracking Centre is also available on the Remote App.” Secure Tracker Pro “also includes secondary authentication that is built into your Smart Key”. Land Rover adds that the services “need to be activated, and the vehicle must be in an area with network coverage”, and doesn’t say whether the centre runs around the clock.2

Is Secure Tracker on your Land Rover?

Don’t assume it. The South African specification pages list “Remote” as standard on every model, and none lists Secure Tracker or Secure Tracker Pro.3,6,9,10 The first subscription term is “advised by your Land Rover Retailer”, and after it you must “renew your subscription and pay the applicable renewal charges”; no lengths or prices are given.13

Land Rover says its tracking accreditation is “often required by insurers in select markets”, without naming a South African insurer, and we found none that accepts it.2 If your insurer requires a tracker, check with it before relying on Secure Tracker.

What the Remote app does

The Remote app locks and unlocks the car, arming the alarm as it does; beeps and flashes to “Locate your Land Rover in a crowd”; shows the last parked location and journey history; sends an alert to reset the alarm; and reminds you after 15 minutes if the car is unlocked.14 Two modes switch the theft alerts off on purpose: Transport Mode “will deactivate automatic theft notifications for 10 hours while the engine is off”, and Service Mode lasts “up to a maximum of 72 hours”.15

Are Range Rovers and Land Rovers stolen in South Africa?

They aren’t on the ranked lists, but they are ordered. In April 2026 the acting police minister said 36 vehicles had been brought back through joint Interpol operations in six months, a Range Rover among them, and Willem Els of the Institute for Security Studies described syndicates placing orders: “We need Range Rovers, this year, so and so.” Vehicles like these are “primarily exported, used for spare parts, or cloned for resale within South Africa”.16

A tracker made the difference in one 2026 case. A white Range Rover worth R2.1 million, reported stolen at Bramley police station in February and “flagged by a tracking company”, was stopped at a filling station in Kranskop on the N1 North in Limpopo, and two men were arrested.17 Our guide to cross-border recovery covers the routes north.

Land Rover Defender

Every Defender 90, 110 and 130 trim, from the S to the Vertex, the 110 Trophy Editions, the 90 and 130 V8 and the 130 Outbound, has the Remote app, Pivi Pro, keyless entry and an intrusion sensor as standard. Secure Tracker isn’t listed on any of them.3,4,5 We found no 2025 or 2026 source that names the Defender as a target.

Land Rover Discovery

The Discovery comes as the S, Landmark and Tempest, all with the D350 diesel, and all with the Remote app, Pivi Pro and keyless entry as standard; the page doesn’t list an alarm or immobiliser.6 In 2025 The Star reported a Land Rover Discovery among vehicles recovered at a property in Kibler Park, Johannesburg, which were “allegedly en route to Eswatini”; the article doesn’t date the operation.18

Does a Jaguar have a tracker? The F-Pace and E-Pace

Jaguar’s South African support page says new Jaguar sales end “From November 2024”, but that “Jaguar InControl® Remote & Protect™ will continue to be supported”.11 Its Secure Tracker page describes the same Stolen Vehicle Tracking Centre, using “real-time GPS tracking and other methods to help swiftly locate and recover your vehicle”, and notes that a “Remote, Secure Tracker or Secure Tracker Pro subscription and InControl account” is required.12

Another Jaguar page still says “All derivatives of F-PACE and E-PACE are available to order now”, which conflicts with the support page.19 We found no South African specifications or theft reports for either model, so check with a Jaguar retailer whether your F-Pace or E-Pace has an active Secure Tracker subscription.
