Car trackers for a Lexus: built-in tracking and theft risk for the RX, NX and LX

Partly. Every new Lexus since September 2019 has a Connect device, and through the MyLexus app it shows where the car is in real time and replays its trips. Lexus South Africa describes no control room or recovery team, so it isn’t stolen-vehicle recovery.1 Toyota’s FAQ names a Lexus Remote app with stolen-vehicle tracking, but says those remote features currently work only on the 2026 Hilux.2

Checked on 28 October 2026 against Lexus South Africa’s MyLexus Connect page, Toyota South Africa’s Toyota Remote FAQ and the 2022 to 2025 reports that cover Lexus.

Does a Lexus have built-in tracking?

It has location tracking, but not a recovery service. Lexus South Africa says that “from September 2019, all new Lexus vehicles include an advanced, state-of-the-art device”, used through the MyLexus app. Its GPS Locator keeps “the location of your vehicle available in real time”, and the other functions Lexus lists are a live map, a logbook with trip playback, battery health checks, a driver behaviour score and Wi-Fi. You can choose not to opt in, but “the device cannot be removed”.1

What Lexus doesn’t describe is anyone who goes after a stolen car: there is no control room, recovery team or theft procedure on the page. Its emergency feature puts you through to the AA “using your current location”, which is roadside help. So the app can show you where your Lexus is, and getting it back is what a tracker with a recovery service is for.1

Toyota’s FAQ describes the other app. MyLexus is the local app for “day-to-day features”, while the global Lexus Remote app offers “Remote Functionalities such as Remote Climate Control, Stolen Vehicle Tracking, Remote Locking and Unlocking”. The same FAQ says those remote features are “currently … only available … for the 2026 9th Generation Hilux”, and we found no Lexus that has them.2 In content presented by Toyota, BusinessTech reported that “Toyota Connect comes standard with all Toyota and Lexus models manufactured from September 2019 onwards”, the same date Lexus gives.7

Will your insurer want two trackers on a Lexus?

It might. Hollard’s hit list, which consumer journalist Wendy Knowler published in April 2025, included every “Lexus: 2018 onward”, without naming models. Owners of the cars on it could be asked to fit two tracking devices, and could lose theft and hijacking cover if they didn’t. Knowler also warned that the list “may have changed”.5

So check your own schedule before you buy anything. The requirement belongs to your policy, not to the car.

How thieves have targeted the RX and LX

When Toyota South Africa offered free security updates in December 2022, the list included “all Lexus RX and LX models from 2015”. The methods it was guarding against were a “CAN attack”, “a combination of forced entry and key cloning”, and “fob relaying”, which “uses receivers and transmitters to remotely read the vehicle’s security key while in the possession of the owner”.3 Cars.co.za described the Lexus models as the RX and LX registered from 2015, and Dealerfloor named the LX 450 and 570.4,6

A case from 2022 shows the risk to a push-to-start Lexus. A Lexus 570LX was taken from a shopping-complex car park in Randburg, and its owner believes the thieves used a “disabling device” on its push-to-start system. It was found about 20 minutes later; the report says security forces linked to Discovery tracked it.8

Lexus RX, NX and LX

All three share the same two published facts: the Connect device on cars sold new from September 2019, and a place on Hollard’s list as a Lexus from 2018 on.1,5 Where they differ is the 2022 update, which covered the RX and LX from 2015 but didn’t name the NX.3

We found no 2025 or 2026 source that names the RX, NX or LX on its own, and no published details of the keyless entry, immobiliser or alarm on the current South African versions. If you have one of the RX or LX models from the update’s years, ask a Lexus dealer whether yours has had it.

Questions people ask

Does Lexus have connected services in South Africa?

Yes. Every new Lexus since September 2019 has a Connect device, used through the MyLexus app, with a GPS locator, live map, trip playback, battery checks, a driver score and optional Wi-Fi. You need the app to use it, and the device can’t be removed.

Can Lexus track a stolen car?

The MyLexus app’s GPS locator shows where your Lexus is, but Lexus South Africa describes no recovery service or control room. Toyota’s FAQ names Lexus Remote for stolen-vehicle tracking, and says those features currently work only on the 2026 Hilux.

Does a Lexus need two trackers?

Some insurers may ask for two. Hollard’s 2025 hit list covered every Lexus from 2018 and warned that two tracking devices might be needed, with cover at risk if they weren’t fitted. Your own policy schedule says what you need.
