Car trackers for an Audi: built-in tracking and theft risk, model by model
Some newer Audis have built-in tracking of a kind. Audi connect, run through the myAudi app, can find the car, send your phone an alert if someone breaks into it, and watch up to 10 “prohibited locations”.1 It isn’t on every model, though, and Audi South Africa lists no service that tracks down or recovers a stolen car, so it doesn’t replace a tracker.1,2,3
Checked on 27 October 2026 against Audi South Africa’s Audi connect brochure, audi.co.za and its 2024 to 2026 launch releases.

What can Audi connect do?
Audi connect is the connected service Audi offers here, and the myAudi app is how you use it. Audi South Africa’s brochure groups its security features together: Car Finder; a Theft Alarm Notification that sends “immediate smartphone alerts if your car is being broken into or tampered with”; geofencing for up to 10 “prohibited locations”; and speed and valet alerts. The app also locks and unlocks the car remotely, and Emergency Call sends “the GPS position, driving direction, and number of passengers” to “relevant local authorities”.1
Not every Audi has it. When Audi announced the service here in September 2020, it was due to start with the new A4 that October and was “model dependent”; audi.co.za still says the services “vary for each model”.2,3 To use them, you register as the car’s key user in the myAudi app and link the car, and Audi warns that “Certain features shown may not be available to the South Africa market.”13
Will Audi connect find a stolen Audi?
Not as a recovery service. Neither the brochure nor audi.co.za offers to locate or recover a stolen car.1,3 The only centres named at the launch were the Audi Emergency Call Centre and the Audi Assist support centre for roadside help, and neither is a team that goes after stolen vehicles.2
One footnote in the brochure matters if a car is driven over a border: “Audi connect is not supported outside of South Africa”.1 Audi publishes no price for the service, and we found no insurer that says it accepts Audi connect in place of an approved tracker. Our guide to cars taken across the border covers what happens next.
Audi A3
The A3 is the only Audi we found on a hijacking list from 2025 or 2026. De Wet de Villiers Brokers put it tenth among the “most hijacked vehicles in 2025”, a list the Hilux tops, and gave one reason for all ten: “high demand on the black market across the African continent”. The list gives no counts.6
Audi connect isn’t standard on it. On the Sportback it comes with the optional Infotainment Package, whose MMI navigation plus and MMI touch offer “a wide range of Audi connect services”.4 In Audi’s words, “the new A3 features ambient light package plus, comfort key and a panoramic glass sunroof”, and the S line package highlights include a “Convenience key”.5 The Sportback and sedan come as an S line or Black Edition, and the RS 3 as standard or Carbon Edition.14 We found nothing on the A3’s immobiliser or alarm.
Its faster sibling shows a different risk. Arrive Alive reported in May 2025 that SAPS and Gauteng traffic wardens acted on intelligence about “a blue Audi S3 suspected to be fitted with cloned number plates”, sold by a dealership that “had already been flagged by the Hawks”.15
Audi Q3
On the all-new Q3, which arrived in June 2026, Audi connect is standard: “Standard specification also includes MMI navigation plus with Audi connect services, the Audi Application Store”. Both powertrains come in Advanced, S line and S line Black trims. The Advanced has a convenience key, the S line builds on it, and the optional Tech package adds “keyless access and locking”.8
We found no report naming the Q3 as stolen or hijacked. Pineapple goes the other way and puts it among the models “less likely to make the list of high-risk vehicles in South Africa”, without naming the data behind that.9 Your insurer still decides for itself, so check your schedule.
Audi Q5
Audi connect is standard on the all-new Q5, which arrived in September 2026, and every Q5 is an S line: the S line and S line Black, as the Q5 or SQ5, in SUV and Sportback form. The optional Tech Pro adds Remote Park Assist, which moves the car “into and out of parking spaces using the myAudi app”.10
We found nothing published on the new Q5’s keyless entry, immobiliser or alarm, and no list that names it as a target.
Audi Q2 and Q7
Neither shows Audi connect in what Audi South Africa publishes. The Q2’s page doesn’t mention Audi connect or the myAudi app at all.7 The Q7’s page mentions the app only as a way to choose the picture on the MMI screen, and the March 2025 release for the revised Q7 and SQ7 doesn’t mention Audi connect.11,12
We found no keyless, immobiliser or alarm details for either, and no list that names them. With no connected service to fall back on, a tracker is the only way to see where either one is.
What to fit to an Audi
Fit a tracker with a recovery service, whichever Audi you drive: Audi connect can warn you of a break-in, but Audi lists no service that gets the car back. Some insurers ask for more. Pineapple says that, depending on the make and model, an insurer may suggest more than one tracker, from two separate companies.16
In its article on the most hijacked cars of 2025, Bidvest Insurance says owners “should invest in comprehensive security systems including immobilisers and tracking devices”, and suggests steering wheel locks “as visible deterrents that may encourage criminals to seek easier targets”.17
Our deals start from R99pm for a wireless recovery unit, or R149pm for a full insurance-approved tracker. Free installation, 36-month contract.
Choose your Audi in the form, from an A3 to a Q7, and we’ll show you the deals that fit it.
Questions people ask
Does Audi have a built-in tracker?
Not one that recovers stolen cars. On the models that have Audi connect, the myAudi app can find the car, alert your phone to a break-in and let you set up to 10 prohibited locations, but Audi South Africa lists no stolen-vehicle tracking or recovery service.
Can I track my Audi car?
Yes, through the myAudi app, if your Audi has Audi connect: it is standard on the all-new Q3 and Q5, and comes with an optional package on the A3. To follow and recover a car that has been stolen, though, you need a tracker with a recovery team, which Audi does not provide.
How do I check my Audi’s location?
If your model has Audi connect, register as the key user in the myAudi app, link the car and use Car Finder. Audi warns that some features may not be available in South Africa, and says the service is not supported outside the country.
Does myAudi have a tracking device?
No. myAudi is an app that talks to Audi connect in the car, which comes with the optional Infotainment Package on the A3 and as standard on the new Q3 and Q5. It is not a separate tracking unit, and we found no insurer that treats it as one.
