Car trackers for a Volkswagen: built-in tracking and theft risk, model by model

No Volkswagen sold in South Africa today comes with published built-in tracking. Its 2026 spec sheets list only App-Connect, which mirrors your phone, and the We Connect Go app it launched here in 2020 no longer has a page on vw.co.za.1,2 The Polo Vivo is second on King Price’s 2026 list of the most hijacked cars, so a tracker with a recovery service is worth fitting.3

Checked on 27 October 2026 against Volkswagen South Africa’s 2026 spec sheets, its price list and vw.co.za.

The Golf R isn’t on Volkswagen South Africa’s 2026 price list, so it isn’t in the table.18

Does a Volkswagen have built-in tracking?

Not any more, going by what Volkswagen South Africa publishes. In 2020 it launched We Connect Go, an app that read the car through a “data plug” in its diagnostic port and passed the data to your phone over Bluetooth. The plug was standard from the Polo Comfortline upwards from July 2020, and could be added to Volkswagens as old as 2008.2 The app had arrived first with the T-Cross in 2019, then spread to the whole local range.10

Even then it wasn’t a tracker. It showed the fuel level, mileage and battery voltage, booked services, kept a trip logbook for SARS and sent the car’s location when you called for roadside help. Nothing in the South African launch mentioned live location, geofences, remote immobilising or stolen-vehicle tracking.2

Today vw.co.za has no page for We Connect Go or any other connected service, and the 2026 spec sheets list only App-Connect, which puts your phone’s apps on the car’s screen.1 A German site reported in 2023 that the app would be switched off on 31 December 2025, without saying whether that applies outside Germany; Volkswagen South Africa hasn’t said what happens here.19 Its 2026 accessories brochure offers locking wheel bolts and lockable carriers, but no tracker.20

Volkswagen Polo Vivo

No. The current Polo Vivo’s spec sheet lists App-Connect and Android Auto, and nothing that reports where the car is. Every trim, from the 1.4 Vivo to the 1.0 TSI GT, has an electronic immobiliser, an alarm with interior monitoring and ultrasonic sensors, and central locking with two folding remote keys. Keyless entry isn’t on the sheet.4

It is one of the cars named most often on hijacking lists. King Price ranks it second for 2026, behind only the Hilux, and gives the reason plainly: “Because so many are on the road, spare parts are always in demand on the black market”.3 AutoTrader also puts the “Polo & Polo Vivo” second, and Pineapple counts the Polo Vivo among South Africa’s high-risk vehicles. None of them publishes a count.5,21

With no keyless entry, a Polo Vivo is less exposed to relay attacks than to remote jamming, which King Price calls the bigger method locally, “Seeing that most South Africans don’t have cars that make use of smartkeys”. Its advice is simple: “always check that your car is locked properly, before walking off.”22

Are Volkswagens targeted by thieves and hijackers?

Yes, the Polo above all. Writing in February 2025, BusinessTech said: “For years, cars from Toyota, Volkswagen, and Ford have been the most targeted vehicles, and this still holds true.”23 A year later Fidelity ADT named the “VW Polo (all variants)” among the models most often targeted, and MasterDrive said the Hilux and the Polo “continue to dominate the statistics”.7,24

The reason given is nearly always parts. King Price says “high-demand parts are easier to sell and harder to trace”, and Gauteng Tourism ranks the Polo third on its list, citing spare parts.25,26 Some thieves don’t take the whole car: The Citizen reported in February 2026 that the LED headlight units on newer Polos “are costly to replace and are increasingly being traded on the underground parts market”.27

Volkswagen T-Cross

The T-Cross was the first Volkswagen sold here with We Connect Go, in 2019, but its current spec sheet lists only App-Connect.10,11 All five trims have an electronic immobiliser, an alarm with ultrasonic interior monitoring and central locking with SAFELOCK. Keyless entry and start come with the Comfort Park package on the Life, Style and R-Line, and not on the two base models.11

Is the T-Cross high risk? It isn’t on any 2025 or 2026 list we found. The one theft we saw reported was in the Pietermaritzburg CBD in September 2025, where a stolen T-Cross was followed by its tracking company and recovered.12

Volkswagen T-Roc

The T-Roc’s 2026 spec sheet lists App-Connect Wireless and no tracking. Of its three trims, the R-Line and R-Line Black style have Keyless Advanced with SAFELOCK and the Life doesn’t. All three come with wheel locks “with extended theft protection”, but the sheet has no line for an immobiliser or an alarm.13

We found no source that names the T-Roc as a target.

Volkswagen Tiguan

The Tiguan on sale now arrived in September 2024 with a seven-speed DSG and a choice of 110kW diesel or 140kW petrol, and its launch release mentions only wireless App Connect.14 Volkswagen hasn’t published a spec sheet for it yet: the Tiguan links on its site still open an April 2024 sheet for the previous model.16

On the Life, keyless entry is a limited-time extra that Volkswagen adds “FREE on us”, so check what the car you are buying has.15 We found no source that names the Tiguan as a target.

Volkswagen Amarok

Every Amarok has an immobiliser and an alarm with interior monitoring, and the single and double cabs add a backup horn and towing protection. Keyless entry and start are standard on the Style and PanAmericana, but not on the single cab, the base double cab or the Life, and the Aventura isn’t on the sheet. As with the rest of the range, the only connected feature listed is App-Connect.17

We found no source that names the Amarok as a target. The police don’t publish makes, but bakkies and panel vans were the second-largest group of vehicles hijacked from April to June 2026, at 1 083.28 Our guide to the bakkies named most often covers the rest.

Will your insurer ask for a tracker on a Volkswagen?

Quite possibly. Insurers decide car by car, and none we checked publishes a list of the Volkswagens that need one. MiWay is the bluntest: “because car theft is such an everyday event in South Africa, you’ll need an approved tracking device in place in order to get car insurance.”29

The wording matters when you claim. Discovery’s plan guide excludes theft and hijack “where the vehicle is not fitted with security or tracking recovery devices as stated in the Plan Schedule”.30

What to fit to a Volkswagen

A tracker with a recovery service, because nothing Volkswagen fits will find a stolen car. On the keyless models (the T-Cross from the Life up, the T-Roc R-Lines, the Golf and the Amarok Style and PanAmericana) protect the key too. Pineapple says that “Putting your car keys in a metal tin or aluminium foil can block the signal between the key and the vehicle”, but that it “only works if the lid is closed tightly without leaving gaps”.21

Our deals start from R99pm for a wireless recovery unit, or R149pm for a full insurance-approved tracker. Free installation, 36-month contract.

Questions people ask

Does Volkswagen put trackers on cars?

Not on the cars it sells in South Africa today, as far as it publishes. Its 2026 spec sheets list only App-Connect for phone mirroring, and the We Connect Go app it launched in 2020 gave fuel, mileage and trip data rather than stolen-vehicle tracking. A tracker is something you fit yourself, or that your insurer asks you to fit.

How can I track my Volkswagen car?

With an aftermarket tracker. Volkswagen South Africa offers no app that shows where a current Volkswagen is, and no tracker among its genuine accessories. If your insurer requires one, choose a unit with a recovery service and keep its subscription paid.

Is T-Cross high risk?

Not on any 2025 or 2026 list we found: King Price, Fidelity ADT, MasterDrive and AutoTrader leave it out. Insurers still decide per car, so check your schedule. One T-Cross stolen in Pietermaritzburg in 2025 was recovered because its tracking company could follow it.

Can my VW app track my vehicle?

Not as a tracker. The Volkswagens on sale have no connected service that reports their position, and the older We Connect Go plug was built for trip logs and roadside help, not for following a stolen car. Only a fitted tracker does that.

Is there a VW app for South Africa?

Not one that locates your car. We Connect Go, launched here in 2020, no longer has a page on vw.co.za, and the 2026 spec sheets list only App-Connect, which puts your phone’s apps on the car’s screen.
