Toyota Land Cruiser tracker: theft risk for the 79, 300 and Prado
A Land Cruiser needs an aftermarket tracker with a recovery service if you want it found after it is stolen. The 79, the 300 and the Prado all have Toyota Connect, but none of them has Toyota Remote, the only Toyota service with stolen-vehicle tracking.1,2,3,4 The Land Cruiser and Prado are named in a 2026 report on a new theft method, and Hollard’s 2025 hit list, which can call for two trackers, included both.5,6
Checked on 27 October 2026 against the Land Cruiser 79, 300 and Prado spec sheets that Toyota South Africa issues.

Does the Land Cruiser have built-in tracking?
It has Toyota Connect, which is not the same thing. The Land Cruiser 300 brochure says the telematics device is fitted as standard and starts working when the dealer activates it and registers the car to the MyToyota app.8 What it reports is where the car stood when the ignition last went on or off; Toyota’s own FAQ calls its car finder a last-parked location, “not real‑time tracking”.4
Toyota Remote, the service where a call centre follows a stolen Toyota minute by minute and can immobilise it, is for now only on the 2026 Hilux. No Land Cruiser 79, 300 or Prado on Toyota South Africa’s spec sheets lists it.1,2,3,4 Toyota South Africa is clear on what that means: “the MyToyota app is not a substitute for vehicle tracking devices”.9
Land Cruiser 79
Every 79 on sale, single cab or double cab, petrol 4.0, diesel 4.2 or the 2.8 GD-6, has Toyota Connect. None has smart entry: the doors lock with a standard remote, and the spec sheet has no line for how the engine starts. Each one comes with a siren alarm and an immobiliser, except the single cab 4.2 diesel manual, which is listed without an alarm, and every 79 has a lock for its spare wheel.1
We found no 2025 or 2026 source that names the 79 as a hijacking or theft target. Cars.co.za’s list of Toyota targets says “Land Cruiser and Prado” without naming a series.10
Land Cruiser 300
All seven derivatives, the 3.3 diesel GX-R, ZX and GR-S, the 3.5 petrol ZX and GR-S and the two hybrids, have smart entry with a panic button and push-button start. Their anti-theft line lists a siren alarm, an immobiliser, intrusion and tilt sensors, “Fingerprint” and an ultra-wideband key.2
In July 2026 a white Land Cruiser 300 ZX, worth R2.2 million, was stolen in Benoni and stopped on the N1 near Makhado, allegedly on its way to the Beitbridge border post. The police acted with private partners to stop it.7
Whether the 300 was part of Toyota’s free 2022 security update is unclear. TimesLIVE listed it, along with the smart-entry Land Cruiser 200; Cars.co.za reported that both “were initially listed but later removed”.11,12
Land Cruiser Prado
The TX, VX-R and VX-L all have smart entry and push-button start, with a siren alarm, an immobiliser, intrusion and tilt sensors, double locking and an ultra-wideband key.3 The brochure explains what ultra-wideband is for: it measures the distance between key and car and “prevents the car’s engine from starting if the key isn’t physically within the vehicle”.13
The Prado VX and VXL from 2017 were in Toyota’s free 2022 security update.11 Hollard’s 2025 hit list included the Prado from 2018, and the Land Cruiser from 2017, and said owners might need two tracking devices.6
In October 2026 a Prado VX worth about R900,000, stolen in KwaZulu-Natal, was recovered at the Capricorn Toll Plaza while being driven from Gauteng towards Beitbridge, “allegedly to be smuggled across the border”. A 40-year-old man was arrested after an operation by the SAPS Provincial Tracking Team and its security partners.14
CAN-bus injection: the method aimed at Land Cruisers
In August 2026 TopAuto, drawing on the Land Cruiser market data provider LandCruiserSA, described CAN-bus injection as “the newest and most sophisticated method”. A thief gets into the car’s data network through a connector at a headlight, a wheel arch or a wing mirror. From there the car can be unlocked, its alarm and immobiliser bypassed and the engine push-started, in under 90 seconds by some estimates. The report named the Land Cruiser and the Prado, along with the Hilux and Fortuner.5
The defence the article mentions, a factory-approved extra immobiliser, came from an Australian source, not from Toyota South Africa.5 Because the attack beats the car’s own alarm and immobiliser, a tracker that reports where the car has gone matters more, not less.
Why a Land Cruiser may need two trackers
Insurers decide what a car needs one at a time, and a Land Cruiser is the kind of car where that can mean two units. The Hollard hit list, which consumer journalist Wendy Knowler published in April 2025, named the Land Cruiser from 2017 and the Prado from 2018, and warned that owners might need two tracking devices or lose theft and hijacking cover. Knowler also warned that the list may have changed.6
MiWay’s wording shows how the rule reaches you: it “may require additional anti-theft devices”, confirmed with you and noted on your coversheet, and there is no valid claim if a required tracker isn’t fitted or its subscription isn’t paid.15 Read your schedule or coversheet before you choose.
The requirement can also arrive in the middle of a policy. In a case the FAIS Ombud resolved in April 2025, an owner insured her Prado in December 2021; in April 2023 the insurer “introduced a new requirement for a tracking device, which was not installed”, and when the Prado was stolen that November her claim was rejected. The insurer said it had emailed her work address but could not prove delivery, and the Ombud found that had it acted properly she would probably have fitted the tracker. It ordered the insurer “to pay R786,300 plus interest”.16 Read every renewal letter for a new tracker condition, and ask if you’re unsure.
What to fit to a Land Cruiser
A tracker with a recovery service, and a second unit if your insurer asks for one. The Benoni case shows why speed counts: that 300 got as far as Makhado, in Limpopo, before it was stopped, and Fidelity says the syndicates “operate across provincial and national borders”.7,17 Our guide to cars taken across the border covers what a tracker can and can’t do once a car leaves South Africa.
An immobiliser is not a substitute: it stops the engine starting without the right key, while a tracker is what finds the car once it has gone. Our guide to anti-hijack systems sets out how the two work together.
Fitting one won’t cost you your warranty. When it launched the 2022 update, Toyota said an aftermarket device “will not negate the warranty” as long as a reputable fitment centre installs it.11
Our deals start from R99pm for a wireless recovery unit, or R149pm for a full insurance-approved tracker. Free installation, 36-month contract.
Choose 79, 300 or Prado in the form, and we’ll quote the units that suit it.
Questions people ask
Can Toyota track my car if stolen?
Only if it is a 2026 Hilux with Toyota Remote: once you report it stolen and your identity is checked, Toyota’s partner follows it minute by minute and can immobilise it. A Land Cruiser 79, 300 or Prado has Toyota Connect instead, which shows where the car was when the ignition last went on or off and comes with no recovery service.
How can I track my stolen Toyota car?
On a Land Cruiser, through an aftermarket tracker with a recovery service: Toyota Connect in the MyToyota app shows only the last place the ignition was switched on or off, so it can’t follow a car that is being driven away. If your insurer asked for two trackers, both must be fitted and working for a theft claim to stand.
How do I know if my Toyota has telemetry tracking?
Look for the “Toyota Connect Enabled” line on its spec sheet: every Land Cruiser 79, 300 and Prado on sale has it. The telematics unit works once the dealer activates it and registers the car to the MyToyota app, so ask the dealer if you can’t see the car in the app.
Does the Land Cruiser have a tracker from the factory?
It has a telematics unit for Toyota Connect, not a stolen-vehicle tracker. None of the Land Cruisers on sale has Toyota Remote, and Toyota South Africa says the MyToyota app is not a substitute for a tracking device, so fit an aftermarket unit with recovery.
