Car trackers for a Kia: built-in tracking and theft risk, model by model
No. None of the Kias sold in South Africa comes with built-in tracking: Kia’s South African site and brochures never mention Kia Connect, an app or tracking, and Kia’s Connect help pages for the region don’t list South Africa.1,2 The Picanto is ninth on King Price’s 2026 list of the most hijacked cars.3
Checked on 27 October 2026 against Kia South Africa’s brochures for the Picanto, Sonet, Seltos and Sportage, and kia.co.za.

Does Kia have built-in tracking in South Africa?
No. Kia South Africa’s home page and its Picanto, Sonet, Seltos and Sportage pages never mention Kia Connect, an app, telematics or tracking, and none of the four brochures lists Kia Connect.1 Kia’s Connect help pages for the Middle East and Africa name no countries and don’t mention South Africa; they say availability “may vary depending on your vehicle’s trim and country”.2
The new Picanto’s marketing says it “arrives with a digital key”, but the same text warns that “Images may show features not available in South Africa”, and the South African specifications have no digital-key line.4,8 What every version of all four models does have is an immobiliser and Data Dot marking.4,5,6,7
Does Kia put trackers on its cars?
Not at the factory, but its finance arm sells one. Kia Financial Services lists “Tracking”: “Find and recover your Kia if it’s stolen by installing a tracking device.” It adds: “Reduce your overall risk and lower your monthly car insurance premium by installing this all-important device.”9
It doesn’t name the tracking company, the price, the models, a control room or any insurer approval, so get those details in writing and compare them with other quotes before you choose.
Kia Picanto
The Picanto is the Kia on the hijacking lists. King Price ranks it ninth for 2026: “Small city cars like the Kia Picanto are becoming increasingly common on hijacking lists. Their prevalence in urban areas means a stolen vehicle blends easily into traffic, reducing the risk of immediate detection.”3 MasterDrive called it “The new entrant to the list” in May 2026, gauteng.net ranks it eighth, and Pineapple counts it among the high-risk vehicles.10,11,12
All four versions, the 1.0 LS and LX and the 1.2 EX and EX+, have a folding remote key, remote central locking with an alarm and an immobiliser, and Data Dot. Only the 1.2 EX+ adds a smart key with a start/stop button. The connectivity list covers Bluetooth, USB, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, with nothing that tracks the car.4
Kia Sonet
The Sonet’s September 2026 brochure covers the LS, LS+, LX, EX and SX, and speaks only of phone connectivity. The SX alone has smart entry with push-button start and remote start; the others have central locking with an immobiliser. Every version has Data Dot, and the brochure has no alarm line.5 We found no source naming the Sonet as a target.
Kia Seltos
The all-new Seltos comes as the LS, LX, GT-Line, GT-Line S and X-Line, with Bluetooth, USB and wireless charging but no connected service. Its smart key lets you “Unlock and start the vehicle while keeping the key in your pocket or bag”, and is “Available from LX upward”. Every version has central locking with an immobiliser and Data Dot; the brochure lists no alarm.6 We found no source naming the Seltos as a target.
Kia Sportage
Under the heading “Connected technology to stay ahead”, the Sportage brochure describes its dual-display touchscreen and phone connectivity, not a tracking service. All six versions, from the 1.6 CRDi LX to the GT-line S, have smart entry with push-button start, central locking with an alarm and immobiliser, and Data Dot.7 We found no source naming the Sportage as a target.
What to fit to a Kia
A tracker with a recovery service, because no Kia sold here reports where it is. With a smart key on the Picanto EX+, the Sonet SX, the Seltos from the LX and every Sportage, keep the key out of reach as well. On the Picanto, bear in mind King Price’s point that a stolen one “blends easily into traffic”.3
Our deals start from R99pm for a wireless recovery unit, or R149pm for a full insurance-approved tracker. Free installation, 36-month contract.
Pick your Kia in the form, from a Picanto to a Sportage, and compare the deals for it.
Questions people ask
Does the Kia app track your location?
Not in South Africa. Kia’s South African site mentions no Kia app or Kia Connect, and the brochures list phone connectivity only, so no Kia service here shows where your car is.
How can I track my Kia car?
With a tracker fitted to it. Kia Financial Services sells one as an add-on, and you can compare it with other trackers; the car itself reports nothing.
Can Kia track a stolen car?
Not by itself. Kia’s finance arm says its tracking product helps you find and recover a stolen Kia, but it is a device you have to fit; no Kia sold here comes with one.
