Car trackers for an Isuzu D-Max or MU-X: theft risk and what to fit
An Isuzu D-Max needs an aftermarket tracker. Isuzu South Africa has no tracking service for its bakkies, its Isuzu 360 app is described only as owner support, and the only factory option, a “Telematics” line on the single cab, isn’t explained anywhere.1,2,3 The D-Max is seventh on King Price’s 2026 list of the most hijacked cars.4
Checked on 28 October 2026 against Isuzu South Africa’s 2026 D-Max and MU-X specification booklets, isuzu.co.za and the Isuzu 360 app listing.
| Model | Factory tracking | Keyless entry and start | Immobiliser and alarm | Named as a target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| D-Max double cab | None listed5 | 3.0 LSE and V-Cross automatics only5 | Both on every derivative; an ultrasonic alarm on most5 | Seventh on King Price’s 2026 list4 |
| D-Max single cab | An unexplained “Telematics” option3 | On none3 | Immobiliser on all; the alarm is an accessory on the two base models3 | The lists name the D-Max without splitting it by cab |
| D-Max X-Rider | None listed5 | Not fitted5 | Immobiliser, alarm and ultrasonic alarm5 | Not by any source we found |
| MU-X | “Telematics” as an accessory on six of seven6 | Every derivative6 | Both on every derivative6 | Not by any source we found |
Is there an Isuzu app or tracker for the D-Max?
Not one that tracks it. Isuzu South Africa’s site has no connected-services or tracking page for its bakkies and SUVs, and names no tracking partner.1 There is an Isuzu 360 app, published by the Automobile Association of South Africa, which its App Store listing calls an “Isuzu south Africa app to connect and support customer needs 360 degrees”. It describes no location or tracking feature.2 The 2026 single-cab booklet lists “Telematics” as an option on all seven derivatives, and the MU-X sheet lists it as an accessory on six, but neither says what it does, who supplies it or what it costs. The June 2026 double-cab booklet has no telematics line at all.3,5,6
Isuzu does fit a system to its trucks. Isuzu Insight is described as “a factory-fitted, end-to-end solution to trucks built from April 2022 onwards”, and lists “ADVANCED TRACKING” without explaining it; it mentions no geofence, remote immobilising, recovery team or price. The page’s summary also refers to bakkies and SUVs, but the page itself describes trucks only, so ask your dealer before you count on it for a D-Max.7
Are Isuzu bakkies stolen in South Africa?
Yes, the D-Max is a named target. King Price ranks it seventh among the most hijacked cars of 2026, says it “appears regularly in hijacking reports”, and points to demand for its resale value and parts, “particularly in agricultural and construction sectors”. It groups the D-Max with the vehicles exported across borders.4 MasterDrive said in May 2026 that the D-Max and Corolla Cross “also remain on the list”, and Pineapple counts the D-Max among South Africa’s high-risk vehicles. None of them gives counts.8,9
Some are driven for the border. The Star reported in June 2025 that an Isuzu bakkie was recovered in Kibler Park, Johannesburg, with a Fortuner and a Land Rover Discovery, all allegedly bound for Eswatini and linked to a cross-border syndicate.10
Isuzu D-Max and X-Rider
Keyless entry is rare on a D-Max. On the double cab, the Passive Entry Start System and remote engine start come only on the 3.0 LSE and V-Cross automatics; no 1.9, no 3.0 LS and no X-Rider has them. Every double cab, the X-Rider included, has a transponder immobiliser and an anti-theft alarm, and all except three 1.9 L derivatives also have an ultrasonic alarm.5 No single cab has keyless entry. All have the immobiliser, but the alarm is an accessory on the 1.9 LR and HR 4x2 and standard on the L derivatives.3
Remote start arrived in 2024 “as a running change on the LSE, V-Cross and Arctic models”. Its remote carries “Remote Start, Lock and Unlock buttons” and works “from up to 20 metres away”.11 We found nothing that names the X-Rider on its own as a target.
Isuzu MU-X
Every MU-X has the Passive Entry Start System, a transponder immobiliser and an anti-theft alarm; the sheet lists no ultrasonic sensor. Remote engine start comes on the 3.0 LSE and the ONYX XT. The unexplained “Telematics” is an accessory on the LS and LSE derivatives and isn’t offered on the ONYX XT.6
We found no source that names the MU-X as a target.
What to fit to an Isuzu
A tracker with a recovery service, since Isuzu lists nothing that follows a stolen bakkie. On the keyless models, the D-Max LSE and V-Cross automatics and every MU-X, keep the key safe as well; our guide to keyless theft explains why.
A tracker can also help with the premium. Dialdirect, answering the question “I don’t want a tracking device. Why do I need one?”, says a tracker lowers the risk of theft, “which means we can offer more affordable car insurance”.12
Our deals start from R99pm for a wireless recovery unit, or R149pm for a full insurance-approved tracker. Free installation, 36-month contract.
If the bakkie works on a farm or a site, choose Business in the form for a fleet quote.
Questions people ask
Is there an app for the Isuzu D-Max?
Not one that tracks it. The Isuzu 360 app, run by the AA for Isuzu South Africa, is for owner support and describes no location or tracking feature. The single cab offers a “Telematics” option that Isuzu doesn’t describe, and the double cab has none.
Is Isuzu a high-risk car in South Africa?
The D-Max is. King Price puts it seventh on its 2026 list of the most hijacked cars, and MasterDrive and Pineapple both name it. We found no source naming the MU-X or the X-Rider on its own.
Does my truck have GPS tracking?
If it is an Isuzu truck built from April 2022, Isuzu says it comes with Isuzu Insight, which lists tracking among its features. Isuzu doesn’t describe a recovery service with it, so check what your insurer requires.
