Car trackers for a Nissan: built-in tracking and theft risk, model by model
Not that Nissan South Africa publishes. Here NissanConnect means the touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and nothing on Nissan’s South African site offers built-in tracking or an app that controls the car remotely.1,2 Two Nissans, the Almera and the NP200, are on Fidelity ADT’s 2026 list of the models hijackers target.3
Checked on 27 October 2026 against Nissan South Africa’s brochures, its specification pages and nissan.co.za.

Does Nissan have built-in tracking in South Africa?
No. In South Africa NissanConnect is the infotainment system: the Navara brochure describes “NissanConnect with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay”, which “lets you seamlessly connect to your compatible smartphone”, and lists no remote services.2 Nissan’s South African site doesn’t mention a connected-car app with remote functions or tracking.1
Nissan has said as much. Replying to a Leaf owner on Hellopeter in June 2022, Nissan South Africa wrote that “currently we have no apps being developed or launched in South Africa”, and the owner said the NissanConnect EV apps didn’t allow South Africa as a region.13 With no connected service, there is also no control room, subscription or insurer approval to ask about.
Are Nissans targeted by hijackers?
Some are. The Star listed Nissan in June 2025 among “the most targeted brands”, alongside Toyota, Volkswagen and Ford, giving demand, parts and smuggling as the reasons.14 In February 2026 Fidelity ADT named the Almera and the NP200 among the models “primarily targeted in recent incidents”, and Wahl Bartmann, chief executive of Fidelity Services Group, said those models are “widely available in the domestic market” with “strong demand for resale or stripping for parts”.3
Both are out of production, and Cars.co.za put it plainly: “Even discontinued cars such as the Nissan NP200 and Nissan Almera are popular hijacking targets”.15
Nissan Navara
Nissan lists no tracking or telematics on any Navara grade; the 8-inch NissanConnect screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is standard from the LE up.4 On the double cab, intelligent keyless entry and push-button start come on the LE, LE Plus, PRO-2X, PRO-4X, PRO-4X Warrior and Stealth, not on the XE, SE or SE Plus, and the single cab doesn’t list them. Every double-cab variant and the single cab have an immobiliser. The brochure lists an alarm only on the single-cab SE.2 Nissan’s website disagrees on the double cab: it lists an immobiliser and alarm on every grade except the Stealth, which it shows with an immobiliser only. Ask the dealer which yours has.4
The Navara isn’t on any 2025 or 2026 list we found, but stolen ones have been caught heading for the border. In August 2026 Limpopo police recovered two stolen Navaras on the N1, both allegedly bound for the Beitbridge border post: a Navara ProMax worth about R900 000, taken in Springs on 1 August, and a grey Navara worth about R600 000, taken in Alberton the day before. Three suspects were arrested.5
Nissan NP200
The NP200 now sits under discontinued models on Nissan’s site, with a transponder immobiliser and DataDot identification but no tracking.6 It is fifth on AutoTrader’s 2026 list and sixth on King Price’s.7,8 The NP200 tracker page covers why it is still targeted and what to fit.
Nissan X-Trail
The X-Trail’s July 2026 brochure mentions a 12.3-inch HD NissanConnect display and nothing that reports where the car is. All three grades, the Visia, Acenta and Acenta Plus, have hands-free smart keyless entry and an immobiliser, and Walk-Away Lock and Approach Unlock, new on South African models from September 2025, are standard. Nissan adds: “Please confirm feature availability with your selected dealer.”9 The specification page lists push-button start and a “Vehicle security system” on every grade, without calling it an alarm.10
We found no source that names the X-Trail as a target.
Nissan Magnite
No Magnite grade lists tracking or a connected app; NissanConnect is again the 8-inch screen. Every grade has “Immobilizer + Alarm” and the Nissan DataDot identification system. Smart keyless entry with push-button start comes on the five Acenta grades, while the Visia grades have a remote key.11
We found no 2025 or 2026 source that names the Magnite as a target.
Nissan Qashqai
Nissan has moved the Qashqai to its discontinued models, and says it is no longer available. Its page mentions the 8-inch and 12.3-inch screens and no tracking, keyless entry, immobiliser or alarm.12 If you are buying one second-hand, ask whether a tracker was fitted and keep the paperwork for your insurer.
What to fit to a Nissan
Every Nissan needs an aftermarket tracker if you want it found after a theft, because Nissan lists nothing that reports its position. King Price warns that “Keyless car thefts and remote jamming are becoming a real trend”, so on the keyless grades, the Navara from the LE up, every X-Trail and the Magnite Acenta, protect the key too.16
Our deals start from R99pm for a wireless recovery unit, or R149pm for a full insurance-approved tracker. Free installation, 36-month contract.
Pick your Nissan in the form, from a Magnite to a Navara, and compare the deals for it.
Questions people ask
Does Nissan have a built-in tracker?
Not in South Africa, as far as Nissan publishes. NissanConnect here is the touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and none of the current brochures or specification pages lists tracking, a vehicle locator or remote functions.
How can I track a stolen Nissan vehicle?
Only through a tracker fitted to it, with a recovery service behind it. Nissan South Africa lists no app that locates its cars, so if yours has no tracker, report the theft to the police and your insurer straight away.
Does NissanConnect have tracking?
Not the version sold here. On the Navara and the Magnite, NissanConnect is the infotainment screen that mirrors your phone, and in 2022 Nissan South Africa said it had no apps being developed or launched in the country.
